Are You Prepared to Coach a Little League Youth Baseball Team?

 Coaching a Little League Youth Baseball team can be one of the most enjoyable Summer experiences a person can have, it can also become a seemingly never ending journey through hell. A well intending, but uneducated Coach can be quickly devoured by unappreciative parents, viscious opposing coaches and unruly and discontented players.

  Most newbie coaches make essentially the same mistakes. They fail to communicate with parents before the season begins on their intentions and goals for the upcoming season. Should your coaching style require discipline and the pursuit of excellence, you don't want to be saddled, nor they with you, with a bunch of parents which believe having "Fun" is the only thing that matters. It works the opposite way just as poorly.

  Then you have the newbie coach who really doesn't know anything about the game except what he sees on television and hears from the announcers. This lack of knowledge may not haunt you in Tee-Ball, but as the ages and skill levels increase, you'll appear quite foolish when your players know more than you.

  Strategy and planning are usually the last thing which will enter a newbie's mind. I once saw a coach call for a bunt, not a suicide bunt, although that would have been just as illogical, with two outs and down by three runs in the last inning. I swear it's the truth. Any doubt that the coach was, shall we say, a little dim witted, was removed that day. The team, which had suffered a discipline and organization problem before, totally fell apart.
