Mexican Baseball

Mexican baseball is not well-known in the USA, but is becoming more popular as the Hispanic population grows and Mexican teams compete on the international level. There are 2 Mexican baseball leagues. They are called the Mexican League and the Mexican Pacific League. The first Mexican baseball league (Mexican League) was formed in the 1920's so baseball in Mexico has been played for almost 80 years.

Mexican baseball history is full of drama and interesting stories just like USA baseball. Early baseball players were from rural areas and some played inspirational games that led to their names being added to the history books. In 1957 it was a 12 year old boy named Angel Macias who energized the sport in Mexico with a power pitch in little league games.

Many Mexican baseball players have gone on to play on professional American baseball teams. Today USA Major League baseball teams include approximately 100 baseball players born in Mexico. The Mexico baseball league teams have proven their ability to develop world class baseball players.

There are 16 summer Mexican baseball teams and 8 winter Mexican baseball teams. The sport has had its ups and downs over the last 80 years, but is once again on the rise. Baseball in Mexico is an exciting sport that attracts thousands of fans. In Mexico, baseball team support continues to grow as the professional Mexican baseball league competes on the international level.

In fact, Mexico baseball has taken the world by surprise at times. In April 2006, Mexico defeated the USA in the inaugural World Baseball Classic! The Mexican victory made the world realize that Mexico was serious about the sport and its players were well trained professionals.

Mexico, like every other country with a baseball team, has a hall of fame. In the Mexican Baseball Hall of Fame is Angel Macias who not only played baseball as a youth and professional. He reorganized and revitalized the Mexican League Baseball Academy and built a 26,000 seat baseball stadium.
