Baseball Dugout

Baseball has many rules and some of them mention the baseball dugout. For example, the offensive baseball team is required to clear space for a ball when it is headed for the dugout during play and the fielder needs room. Another rule is that a player is awarded second base after a ground rule double where the ball was deflected into the dugout.

The baseball dugout has its own baseball history too. When you look at pictures of 1950s baseball dugouts at Wrigley Field, you will see the first phone line run from the dugout to the bullpen in a stadium. Dugouts are simply a designated area in the foul territory where team members who are not playing can sit while the game is in progress.

The baseball dugout is traditionally built with benches. A player's bench is usually made out of wood or aluminum. You can buy prebuilt benches with frames, seat and end caps, or you can buy the pieces and build the benches yourself. Baseball dugout benches have to be sturdy because they must hold many players.

Baseball dugout construction is not difficult. You can make a player bench with no back or one that has a back for the comfort of the people sitting on the bench. Benches can be used in areas besides the dugout also. Smaller baseball parks or visitor seating are perfect candidates for benches.

Baseball dugouts can be located between home plate and first base, or home plate and third base. Convenience is the overriding factor when deciding where to locate the dugout.

Most dugouts are lower than the field and are covered. They also have protective fencing around them so the ball cannot hit the players. The low profile dugout also works to minimize distractions to the players on the field. On softball or youth baseball fields the dugout may be field level.

Dugout covers can be made out of many materials just like the dugout benches. The covers protect the players from the elements, especially during the summer or when it rains. After playing baseball on the hot field, the covered dugout gives relief from the sun. This can be important for all players, but especially the younger players.

When you are constructing a baseball field, you should include materials for the dugout when making the materials list. You can find diagrams and instructions online to build a dugout from scratch. Or you can buy pre-assembled benches and other materials such as fencing and covers.
